During WWII conducted convoy escorts, anti-submarine patrols, and rescue of ships and aircraft in distress. Credited with the sinking of a Japanese Submarine in July 1942 and a multiple-person rescue of a downed aircraft in February 1943.

Credited with sinking 23 major Japanese ships (the third highest total for any U.S. Navy Submarine) for an approximate tonnage of 90,080. Silversides received the Presidential Unit Citation and 12 Battle Stars for her wartime service.
